The space that divides…
Ok, you knuckleheads. (If I’m calling you a name, it means that I like you.) Time to dig into a coaching practice that I’ve modified and have been using for 20 years. It has since been modified by Dr. Andy Galpin on the Huberman podcast.
Methodology:I’m going to give you 4 buckets and 10 points. You can’t halve or quarter the points. You have to use a full point.
The daily practice I use on me and my clients is how much energy is spent on each bucket. The points you put into the bucket are the daily energy used for each bucket.
Buckets: The space that divides these buckets is so small. You likely will try and manipulate the buckets to fit what you think what you want versus the reality Don’t. Go with your FIRST impression.
Personal: This is your bucket for family, marriage, kids, significant others, and relationships.
Professional: This bucket is your work, work travel, and work relationships. Entrepreneurship. Job-related demands.
Wellness: This is exercise, hikes, walks, bike rides, yoga, swimming, run, and even meditation. (though some could use meditation in the next bucket)
Recovery: The forgotten one. The misfit toy. Your downtime. Your rest. Your recharge. (Sleep is a component of recovery)
I’m going to use ME as an example for further understanding.
Personal. 3 points. This is both good and bad. My points are the energy that I’m using up for my relationships. Family. External stress. Friendships. Current and past relationships. Trying to seek balance and have people in my (life) that will create positive energy.
Professional. 3 points. Commentating gigs are back. LOVE THIS! The business was rebranded and that created some confusion. The core of the business is coaching. I LOVE coaching cyclists and endurance athletes. Furthermore, the skills I have learned in the past 10 years now afford me the ability to coach people/entrepreneurs/ businesses in achieving a healthy life balance. This has energized me! It is also taking bandwidth.
Wellness: 3 points. I feel I”m in the best shape I’ve been in the past 10 years. Mentally, physically, and spiritually. I do my walk daily. I go to Yoga. I ride. I hike. I’ve driven my car 4 times in one month. I don’t feel the pressure of exercise. I feel the PULL!'
Recovery: 1 point. Yesterday was rough. I was complete shit at Yoga. Yard sale. I was depleted. I have been sleeping much better but also know that I have a tendency to push when I see results. (NOT JUST PHYSICAL RESULTS.) That sabotages my sleep. Most of us live in the world of 1 or 0 points for recovery. This will lead to burnout.
Now …if you are brave enough. Do a 360 analysis and ask your significant other, family, and friends to assess your points. . Be prepared for an argument. 😫
I do this every day, at the end of the day. You need to be vulnerable enough to admit what you are doing may or may not be leading you to better health and wellness.
Tailwinds,
Chad
