Dear Chad,
Thank you for your post on concussions. The video on what a concussion is and how it affects your brain was fascinating and more info than I received from all the doctors I saw after my concussion. But the best part was reading your personal experience from your concussion a few years ago. As with anything, you want your body to heal and your life to return to normal as fast as possible. And since every concussion is different, none of my doctors could tell me how long the symptoms would last - one week, one month, one year? It took 4 months for my doctors to finally sign off that I was “done.” It has now been almost a year since my accident but there are days when I don’t feel “done” with the concussion. Reading through your notes reminded me that my body is probably not as “done” as I would like, and that’s okay. So now when I have days when I’m exhausted for no reason, or my short term memory isn’t working as well as it used to, or any of the other frustrating little things that weren’t there before the accident, I can remind myself that concussions can take a long time to fully heal and that’s okay.

Chad is an incredible contributor to USA Triathlon’s events and programming. At our conference, Endurance Exchange, Chad took engagement with our presenters to another level that provided for extremely valuable and educational content for our coaches, race directors and athletes in attendance. Chad proved we need to have knowledgeable though-leaders as we are delivering education to our constituents. At our national championship triathlons, Chad brings a welcoming voice and enthusiastic tone to athletes as they prepare for the highest level of racing in the U.S. His detailed commentary is a much-needed asset to athletes and spectators.

From Spencer: “It's clear to me that I received the benefits of the 33 Rule before there was the 33 Rule. As one of his coached athletes, Chad made me aware of where I was in all the areas of my life, which helped me tremendously to see gaps and adjust accordingly. While Chad has been teaching and coaching these concepts for years, the 33 Rule brings a new level of awareness, tactics, and strategies for balance and success.”

Before:
Crestor 5 mg for Cholesterol
Amlodipine Besylate 5 mg for High Blood Pressure
CPAP machine for Sleep Apnea
Loss of 42 pounds and sleep apnea doesn't require CPAP machine anymore
Now off all meds!!!
I began my cycling journey in 2012 when I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. My goal at that time was simple: to lose weight and eat healthier. After struggling for 4 years on my own, I found TotalCyclist in 2016. I trained at TotalCyclist two times a week and rode outdoors on both Saturday and Sunday. My initial goal was to get faster so I could do group rides and not be the last person who was struggling to stay with the group. I soon realized that I needed more than just exercise to lose weight. Nutrition, dealing with stress, sleep, and overall health became my new goals. I wanted to get off my high blood pressure medication, my high cholesterol medication and my CPAP machine for sleep apnea. That is where my journey began!
Exercising: Since I fell in love with cycling, I cannot wait to ride my bike every day. Since 2016, I have trained at TotalCyclist at least two times a week – YEAR ROUND! Yes, training at TotalCyclist gives me specific weekly plans to become a faster, smarter, and more efficient bike rider. These plans target the right training to take me to the next level. When I ride outdoors with a group ride, I immediately see the difference in my abilities as a cyclist as I am stronger and faster. But the added benefit of going to TotalCyclist was to meet other like- minded people who share the love of cycling. I have made lifelong friends.
I never liked running but I love to walk. I now walk every morning around 15 minutes when I first wake up. This “fasted walk” starts my day out right. I even added an evening walk that makes me feel so good. It gives me a chance to enjoy the weather (no matter the season), to not think about anything at work or that causes me stress, and to get outdoors after sitting at a desk all day long.
Nutrition: My nutrition was awful. Processed foods, no consistency in times that I would eat, never looked at labels. Protein, Carbs, and Fat balance? What was that? To reach my goals, I needed to change my life. With Coach Chad’s direction, I went cold turkey on getting rid of as much sugar, alcohol, breads, pasta, and processed foods as I could. Was it difficult? YES! But I knew that I needed this change to become healthy. I eat every 2 hours now with a healthy balance of protein, fat, and carbs. How did I do that? Accountability with Coach Chad and documenting everything I ate on the MyFitnessPal app. I soon discovered that my food choices had very little protein. And what was good fat? I found that once I started eating “clean” food, I wasn’t hungry. Who thought I could lose weight and not be hungry? In fact, I had to set an alarm to remind me to eat every 2 hours because I eat BEFORE I get hungry. After losing over 40 pounds by changing my food choices and timing, people around me would ask when I was going to stop eating every 2 hours and go back to my regular food. I said “Never! This is not a diet that I stay on until I lose the weight I want. It is a lifestyle change that will allow me to be healthy for the rest of my life.” I have not gained any weight back.
I went back to my doctor after losing the weight and I am no longer on high blood pressure or high cholesterol medication. I did another sleep study and I no longer have sleep apnea that requires use of a CPAP machine. In fact, my doctor told me to stop losing weight. Goal met!
Dealing with Stress: Next step in the process of changing my life. We all have stress in our lives so we need to find out how to deal with it. For me, it was learning how to recognize what was causing my stress in the first place. Recognition is halfway to the solution. Through others, I discovered that when I get stressed or anxious, I shake my leg. A physical trigger!
Now to think of why am I doing this? This trigger meant that I was stressed with work, spouse, kids, family, friends, life in general!
What was causing it? I created a checklist (which works for me) as I recognized things--I try to control things that I don’t have control of. I set unrealistic expectations. I try to do more than one task as a time. I let myself get in the way of myself. I know there are more but these are just a few things.
So what can I do about handling the stress? Back to my checklist! At the first sign of stress or anxiety, I immediately stop and do some controlled breathing. This calms the anxiety and helps my emotions get back in check. But I needed more because this doesn’t always work. I get up and walk around (move away from the situation causing the stress); I walk outside if possible; I do a 5 minute meditation; I take a break for as long as I need to relieve the stress. I never meditated before in my life but now it is a daily occurrence for me. At bedtime, first thing in the morning, and whenever I am stressed or anxious. Meditation especially helps me before any big decision, meeting, bike ride, or life event. It focuses me, settles my emotions, and helps me take time for myself.
Sleep: Sleep has always been a struggle for me. I used to have sleep apnea. I am a night person by nature. Mornings have always been tough. I realized that I need 8-9 hours of sleep a night. How do I manage to do that when life gets in the way? I have worked diligently to get my sleep better. While I still am not where I want to be, I am getting closer to a regular routine to get to bed around the same time each night and wake at the same time every morning. Calming the thoughts of work, family, and to do lists in my head was critical in getting to sleep faster. Meditation each night has taught me to do that. I am relaxed. I am taking care of me. I am not waking during the night and thinking about stressful situations. In our busy lives, lack of sleep is so detrimental to our health. This is one goal that I will continue to focus on.
Overall Health and Wellness: My life has changed since I started my journey in 2016. I call myself DZ version 2.0. The most important thing I have learned is to take care of ME. Nothing should ever “get in the way” of my health/wellbeing. That means my exercise is like an appointment. I don’t generally cancel doctor appointments or other appointments when life gets in the way so I treat my exercise the same way. If I choose unhealthy food, I usually don’t feel very well. I believe in myself now because I am making better choices in all aspects of my life. I have more self-confidence and am able to face my fears because I am successful in the little changes that I have made in my life. Baby steps! I look for the positives in life instead of the negatives. I have a plaque that says “One small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day.” A positive thought can change my day and others when I am willing to share it.
Every day I have a hard time remembering who I used to be. I feel so much better today than yesterday and I know I will feel even better tomorrow than today. I am growing every day. I love this journey I am on. The lifelong friends I have made through TotalCyclist come from different backgrounds but we all share a common interest of cycling and becoming a better version of ourselves. Being around positive, encouraging people is the best medicine ever. I have accomplished so many goals that I never even dreamed of. Thank you, TotalCyclist and Coach Chad, for being on this journey with me! I cannot wait to see where I will be in the future!

Chad is a big part of why I have enjoyed working in the cycling industry. I didn't know much when I started, but the more I have listened to Chad over the past 13 seasons, the more familiar and actually the more comfortable and confident I have become in my own knowledge of the sport.
As an announcer, he is so detailed not only about what is happening on the course, but facts about the riders themselves. He has been and continues to be an integral part of every event I have had the pleasure of working alongside him, and I look forward to the next event after the closing of one.
He uses his talent not only in the delivering of information, but personally he has guided me in the designing of graphics that I have made for the live broadcasts, from suggestions as to what would be important for viewers to know to how it should appear on the screen that makes the most sense. His knowledge of everything from palmares to intricate personality traits of each rider has allowed me the ability to add details via words to the visuals via camera captures.
In the past couple years, Chad has taken the lead with the social media accounts for both Speed Week and Athens Twilight and has single-handedly grown the number of followers, engagements, and reposts. He's very knowledgeable in the social media realm, and since he is so in tune with cycling and those who race, produce, and host the events, it's a seamless process for him to relay information to both uber cycling fans and those just getting into the sport.
USA CRITS has tasked Chad with consulting for all of the races. His scope of work includes social media, sponsor engagement, advising and event liaison just for starters.
Chad is an asset in the cycling space, and anyone who has worked with, currently works with, and will work with him understands this.

DIVACAMP WAS A MAGICAL ELIXIR…
of skilled coaches and nutritionists, passionate cyclists and challenging routes. DivaCamp provided a full immersion experience that allowed me to focus on mental and physical technique. The active radio-based coaching was highly effective in guiding me through adjustments on the bike and giving me an immediate sense of the power of slight modifications in my position. DivaCamp truly addresses the 'total cyclist' via a holistic approach to nutrition, cycling technique, mental attitude and recovery. The coaches and nutritionists actively and uniquely engaged with each participant to learn about individual goals and blockers. Through their years of experience, they were able to customize the individual action plans, while seamlessly managing the full group dynamic. The lessons learned in DivaCamp are immediately relevant and impactful. Fine-tuning head position during a descent, improving efficiency over a long ride, positioning my body for a steep gravel climb and so many more. The nutritional insights - what, why, how, when - were incredibly impactful in helping with overall health and recovery. The mental conditioning through a persistent positive tone in conversations with coaches and participants was also something I carried forward.

As far as the labs go - BP stayed stable, 120/74.. The big change in numbers came from cholesterol and A!C.
Pre-Rocket: Cholesterol 280, Triglycerides 143; HDL 53, LDL 198. HBA1C 6.5; Fasting Glucose 129
During Rocket: Cholesterol 204, Triglycerides 102; HDL 62; LDL 122; HBA1C 5.7; Fasting Glucose 103
During the time I was working with TotalCyclist, I sometimes ate 5 eggs a day. Kinda busts the eggs and cholesterol myth
Helpful interventions - although I stayed injured most of our time together and not able to fully take advantage of everything included in the coaching (broken foot, strained knee then sprained knee and the numbness down the right side during running), you found a way for me to get some exercise in and continue with the weight loss although it was slow. Texting pictures of what I ate was extremely helpful along with weighing every morning (which I hated), providing me with the proper nutrition of how to fuel my body (giving us sugar was HUGE - I'm convinced it's evil and studies show it's more addictive than cocaine), shutting the kitchen at 7:00. These "rules" continue to guide me today.. Your feedback and suggestions when I said I had the swimgries (swim hangry) was valuable. Open communication as to how I felt, what I thought was working, guidance when weight loss would stall to get the scale to moving again It was not a static approach. You were always working my nutrition and workouts (limited as they were) in order to keep the scale moving downward. I'm not much for reflections so I didn't think that added any particular value to the coaching for me I'm sure it works for most.
I hope this is helpful to you. Thanks again for your words. I still remember what sold me on you. No one had ever said anything like this to me at all - "it's not your fault you're overweight. It's someone's job to make food taste so good . . ."
The accountability and ease of communication through text. The training plan was great but the explanations and reasoning behind the plan gave me better understanding and insight. The guidance for the lifestyle change has been the most important. I know I can eat what I want, but the weight of whether it’s worth the calories or if just loved something…. verses impulse eating and cravings. It gave me a better understanding of my body and how to fuel it. I would never have come so far, so quickly without my TC coach and support. Now I am back on my bike and happy with my riding and my health. Thank you!

“I picked up Mountain biking in 2021 for my primary sport. Squash was my primary sport of choice and Covid stopped it. I decided to try Mountain biking. When I started in mountain biking I had no idea about techniques and just rode the bike. One day at the Sherman Branch trail, in Charlotte, I realized there has to be a better way to pick up this sport. I contacted Chad at TotalCyclist and joined one of their clinics. Chad and all other coaches were fantastic at teaching. My riding became better than I anticipated. From there I kept growing. I met many friendly and like-minded cyclists at the clinics. We are now one big family. I’ve lost 35 lbs too!-

“How was your weekend of training?
”Excellent!!! Oh my God! I got to practice everything I learned with you last weekend. I got so many compliments, and I was used as a model to look at my form going downhill on corners. I was very strong on uphills,, a lot of climbing!
I am so glad we did our coach camp and rode Green River Cover, I would not have survived the ride today If I had not experienced the coaching on cornering and climbing... and of course having you as my coach, I told everyone you were my coach, 😊

I attended 2 camps TC hosted for Try if for Life. I really enjoyed both clinics. We had our event today and my confidence was up due to the clinics and practicing afterward TIFLs.
I diligently worked on my turns and on cadence. I upgraded my bike computer to include cadence but am pausing about its accuracy. It’s a start though. Still a bit nervous going down hills 😊. During practice, my bike chain has fallen off twice. I got it back on but didn’t escape the greasy fingers. In the clinic the bike was on the rack – kind of different when it happens on the road and no rack! But the important thing was I didn’t panic and got through it. I carry gloves in my bike pack now!
it was great seeing Donna at our event today – smiling and cheering us all on. Today I started following your Diva Cycling Camp FB page.
Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for all your assistance and hope to see you guys at future Camps and Clinics.
