DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS
Not Dead Yet
Happy “Día de los Muertos”! It is a braiding together of pre-Colombian ritual and European tradition celebrating the richness of life and the inevitable journey of death.
How are we looking at our lives as endurance athletes, family members, and work-a-holics? How will we be remembered? Some of us are great at thinking of our legacy. Some of us do not want to think about our mortality. Myself? I’m kind of in the middle. Here’s how I want to be celebrated, every day of my existence, and how I want to be remembered when I’m pushing daisies.
A great father. This has been very challenging for me. I’ve had my ups and downs. Gone too much, then when back in town I was the “Sheriff”. I’m sure there are super dads/moms out there. I admire you. How did you manage to ride 4 hours on a Sunday, go to church, feed the kids, take time for your loved ones and find space just for you? I want all of you to have that balance in your life. Appreciate it. They grow up fast. The bike, the run, and the pro commentary will be there. But will you be there for them?
A good coach. Wait, great, not good. I just had a meeting with a potential client. He’s going through some physical issues. He wants to be happy and healthy. He doesn’t care about “racing” anymore. He wants a higher quality of life. How ironic, that on the “Day of the Dead”, he wants to live longer, happier and healthier. I’m his guy. I’m good at helping others become happier AND healthier.
A good person. I know that I won’t be great all the time. I won’t be terrible either. Good means more than good. It means waving to people. (Hey cyclists, that means stop race facing or nodding. For god's sake take your hand off the handlebar and WAVE! I want to open the door for anyone. Tip well, if service is good. Thank someone, for something that is innocuous to them, but resonated with me. Help someone. Hug someone.
My question to you. What is your legacy? What will be your legacy? I think today, The Day of the Dead, is a great day to reflect, grow and hug someone that needs a hug. That would be a great start.
